Re: Ning Communities

In looking at the different Nings I feel the Teacher Librarian Ning has the most useful setup. The different tabs allows members to quickly access interest only information without having to read information that they're not interested in. It also allows the owner quick and easy access for updating. This setup allows postings for upcoming events, photos of author visits, booktalks, etc.

Re: TASK 2: Create a Blog Post about Creating Your Blog

What do you think will be most helpful about having a blog?
The one helpful thing about creating and using "Blogs" is that it allows your toolkit to automatically broaden by doubling or tripling resources at your finger tips. It also keeps you technically tuned in to new /upcoming versions of Web technology. At the same time you are nourishing your inner youth by continuing to use both sides of your brain.
What do you think will be the greatest challenge of having a blog?
The greatest challenge of a blog is keeping it updated. And scheduling time to review the daily postings and questions. Also, changing the look of your blog to keep it fresh and new for your followers.
What value do you intend for others to glean from your blog?
I would like for others to be able to find author/ illustrator information, booklist, booktrailers and updated technology information.

In my blog post I wanted to get across how hectic senior year is not just for the student but for parents as well. Really starting with Junior year, but senior year is where all the pressure is felt.
It is quite jubilant once the 4 big moments (college visits,SAT / ACT,Prom / Project Prom, graduation ) are completed. I'm glad I only get to do this once!!!

How Are You Modeling Lifelong Learning?
by DEBORA L DILLARD - Monday, June 14, 2010, 10:12 AM
When teachers or students come to see me for information they're looking for that I don't know off the top of my head, I don't hesitate to go to the library computer and let them see use the library databases to help me find the information they need.
I also talk through with them what and where I'm looking on the computer.
Strategies I plan to utilize more of is to teach grade level reminder lessons on legit and safe cites purchased by the district for students to use.

In my ideal lesson plan I would like to create a Ning network that allows me create a tab flow chart much like the sample Teacher / Librarian under the Web 2.0 Tools.
My audience would be: students, teachers, parents and anyone who would like to see what’s happening in the Lieder library. (This cite could be linked from the school’s Wiki)
Contents of the Ning would be as follows:
Main Page ( which displays tabs for quick an easy navigation of the cite
Events Tab (for announcing upcoming author visits, book fairs, anything that the library sponsors
Photo Tab (of activities sponsored by the library or that took place in the library)
Book Trailer Tab (created by me, other librarians, and /or other reputable resources
Suggestions taken from teachers as to what they would like to see”Tabbed” that would be useful to them.
I believe a cite would be beneficial to my audience because it gives teachers and students a place to publish, as well as a place to stay current on library activities, questions and answers.
To create the Ning cite would take some time. I can estimate several weeks to months. It definitely would have to be started as a summer project to have most, if not all, components up and running for the beginning of a school year.
Once the cite is created it could be shared with students in two 25 minute class lessons. (Breaking the cite into segments and allowing students to explore, blog and listen to book trailers.

What do you find interesting about your selected blogs?
I found the formats easy to read and to follow also updated.

It allows teachers to create instant access to safe, reputable information.http://liederleopard.blogger.com

Surviving Senior Year
This year was a milestone for the" Dillard" family; my daughter graduated from high school!!! Senior year was everything I expected it would be(hectic)!!!
During "senior" open house when the counselor asked how many parents are experiencing senior year for the first time. Then commented," Oh what fun you're going to have". I knew then that she was not telling the truth.
Between the college campus visits, Fees for: graduation announcements, cap & gown, college applications (notice the "s" for pluralization), prom, project prom, SAT & ACT test; more college visits, applying for scholarships (notice the "s" again), keeping your kid mentally intact because of all the projects (especially if they're in AP classes) and finally filling out the FAFSA and forbid your child has applied to a school that required the CSS form. This was not fun!
But now that all of this is behind us and the graduation celebration is over I'm needing serious R and R which won't happen for a while because now we have to get ready for college send off.
In the long run, if I had to do it again I wouldn't change anything!!
